Nautilus, Shell Cove — Precast Facade for an Award-Winning Waterfront Landmark

Nautilus is the signature residential development at The Waterfront, Shell Cove — a new harbourside community by Frasers Property Australia and Shellharbour City Council. Set on a prime marina promontory, the project enjoys sweeping views to the Pacific Ocean, Shellharbour Marina and the Illawarra escarpment. Its 116 luxury apartments are arranged across two buildings of five and four storeys, with a distinctive crescent form that follows the curve of the coastline.

Celebrated nationally for its sculptural geometry, Nautilus received the 2022 UDIA National Award for Excellence in Design after first winning the NSW State award. Its semi-circular plan and fluid architectural lines are echoed and reinforced through an extensive custom precast façade.

We supplied 550 individually cast, custom-colour precast concrete panels, forming the landmark’s signature vertical blades and horizontal fins. These elements rotate around the building’s radius, creating a shipbuilding-inspired profile and a subtle “ladder” effect across the balconies. Combined with bronze balustrades and expansive glazing, the façade gives the development an elegant yet commanding presence on the waterfront.

The result is a refined, highly coordinated precast solution that delivers the architectural ambition — a building shaped by the harbour, expressing both movement and permanence.
